Changan breaks ahead in the hydrogen internal combustion engine

Recently, many domestic media have published a newsletter: China's self-developed hydrogen internal combustion engine was successfully ignited in Chongqing Changan Automobile Company.
The research and development of new energy vehicles has maintained a very high degree of heat in China in recent years. The research results of pure electric, hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell power of various models have been reported in newspapers. However, this is the first case for hydrogen internal combustion engine products. Little people have known that Changan is developing hydrogen internal combustion engines.
How was this engine developed? Where is its breakthrough technology? Is it a laboratory sample or a prototype that needs to be industrialized? With these questions, our reporter interviewed Dr. Zhan Yusong, the vice president of Changan Automobile Engineering Research Institute.
R&D model: combination of government, industry, research and research According to Dr. Zhan Yusong, Changan’s hydrogen internal combustion engine project began two years ago. In September 2005, Changan Company and Beijing Institute of Technology jointly reported the project to the relevant state departments. In January 2006, it became the only hydrogen internal combustion engine project in the major project of the “863 Program” of the Ministry of Science and Technology. At the same time, the project is also supported by the National Science and Technology Commission. Dr. Zhan said that the support of relevant state departments plus the company's own funds has so far invested about 10 million yuan.
In terms of team building, Changan Engineering Institute established a new energy research office, and more than a dozen people specialize in the research and development of the project. Other departments provide supporting support, such as engine, process, and laboratory. Beijing Institute of Technology has a dedicated R&D team led by Professor Liu Fushui.
In addition, this project has also absorbed the participation of some professional technology companies and component suppliers, such as companies that provide calibration, gas supply, and electronic control systems, to ensure the supply of some special components. Because it is a pre-development, it is still the first in China, so the technical requirements for special parts are mainly proposed by Changan and Beijing Institute of Technology. Parts suppliers sometimes make some suggestions in the collaborative research and development process.
Key Technology Breakthrough: Electronic Control System The working principle of hydrogen internal combustion engine power system is the same as that of traditional internal combustion engine, but its combustion medium changes from liquid to gas, especially hydrogen does not have certain lubricity like fuel. Therefore, the development of hydrogen internal combustion engines needs to break through traditional technologies in many aspects.
Zhan Yusong said that the current Changan hydrogen internal combustion engine has successfully achieved ignition. There are three major breakthroughs in technology: the construction of a prototype platform, the avoidance of tempering and surface combustion technology, and the development of an advanced electronic control system.
Building a virtual prototype platform is an inevitable step in engine development. The development of the virtual prototype platform of the hydrogen internal combustion engine needs to verify a series of working processes on the basis of the virtual prototype platform of the gas oil machine, according to the characteristics of hydrogen, from gas supply, mixing, combustion to discharge. At the same time, the project built a physical platform for prototype development, and carried out overall design, and developed a series of sub-systems, such as peripheral gas supply system, hydrogen injection system, control system, and completed combustion chamber modification.
From simulation, simulation, development of physical prototypes, to experimental development, the most critical of these is the precise control of the concentration of the mixed gas. Because the vehicle is constantly changing in various working conditions during operation, the concentration requirements of the mixed gas are different under different working conditions. To ensure smooth running under various working conditions, the concentration control of the mixed gas is very important. Hydrogen is highly active and explosive. Therefore, the control of mixed gas is both a key point and a difficult point. Zhan Yusong believes that the development of an advanced electronic control management system is the core technical achievement of the Changan hydrogen internal combustion engine project.
What's more, these breakthrough technologies are the technology of the project team with completely independent intellectual property rights, and they are original, not passively tracking international advanced technology.
Industrialization prospects: What is the industrialization plan for the Changan hydrogen internal combustion engine that can realize mass production of vehicles in 2015? Dr. Zhan Yusong said that the current successful ignition and the development of the first round of prototypes can be said to be just getting started, and the road to industrialization is still very long.
According to Zhan Yusong's analysis, in order to realize industrialization and technology, the next step is to improve the control system and injection system to make it smaller and continuously reduce the cost to meet the loading requirements. This process is a gradual process and relatively easy to implement.
In terms of policies and regulations, we must finally enter the production stage, and we need to establish sound regulations and standards systems, such as access conditions, safety regulations, and after-sales services. Although this system is complex, it will gradually improve as the product matures. At present, the hybrid regulations and standards system are gradually improving, which is an example.
Another important factor in the industrialization of hydrogen internal combustion engines is the construction of social supporting systems, such as the production and supply of hydrogen and the construction of hydrogen refueling stations.
Dr. Zhan said that the elimination of relevant policies, social supporting facilities and market consumption concepts and other factors, only in terms of technology maturity, it is estimated that 2015 Changan can achieve mass production of hydrogen internal combustion engines.
