Brazil Releases New Standard for Automotive Battery Technology

According to the news from the WTO's Inspection and Quarantine Information Network, Brazil's National Metrology, Standards and Industrial Quality Organization (INMETRO) recently issued a resolution establishing new batteries for lead-acid batteries and batteries used to start internal combustion engines for automobiles and motorcycles. technical standard.

It is understood that the battery covered by this standard is clean, dry and free from damage, and there is no obvious electrolyte residue. The battery must carry a Portuguese logo or label with relevant information, including the manufacturer's or importer's name, address, and tax number; the country of origin, the address and certificate of the imported battery manufacturer; the business name (brand) and the date of manufacture.

In addition, the standard requires that the battery be accompanied by the following information: rated voltage; rated capacitance (measured in ampere hours) at 25 degrees Celsius; standby capacity per minute at 25 degrees Celsius; cold start current; classification of battery technology; Service information; information on how to properly handle it after use; reminders related to health and environmental risks; certification of conformity; technical standards that the battery must meet, and net weight in kilograms.

It is worth noting that if the actual weight of the battery exceeds or falls below 5% of the stated weight of the logo/label, the battery will be deemed by the Brazilian authorities as non-compliant.

In addition, by weight, Brazil also requires that the mercury content in the battery not exceed 0.005%, the cadmium content must not exceed 0.010%, and must meet other requirements.
