The U.S. Department of Commerce announced on the 26th that it is launching anti-dumping investigations on xanthan gum products imported from China and Austria. This is the third anti-dumping investigation launched by the United States on Chinese products this year.
The U.S. Department of Commerce said that the investigation was launched at the request of Georgia’s Spikke Company. The investigation may lead to the United States levying punitive tariffs on this product. The US Department of Commerce believes that the dumping margins of xanthan gum exported from China and Austria to the United States are 154.07% and 145.02%, respectively.
Xanthan gum is a bio-rubber with functions such as thickening and emulsification, and is mainly used as a food additive in ice cream, dairy products, jelly, and other products. According to data from the US Department of Commerce, the value of xanthan gum imported from China and Austria in the United States in 2011 is expected to be US$64 million and US$25 million, respectively.
According to the US procedure, the US International Trade Commission is expected to make an initial ruling on the investigation on or about July 20. If the agency determines that such products imported from China cause substantial damage or threats to US-related industries, the US Department of Commerce will continue A "double counter" investigation was conducted and it is expected that an initial ruling will be made in November.
