China is becoming the most active market for optical devices

Zhou Bingjun, president of the China Optical Society and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, stated at the “China Communication Optoelectronic Device Development Summit Forum” held on the 11th that since the adjustment of the global IT industry in 2000, China has become an important base for the global communication optical device industry. By the end of 2009, China’s telecommunications optical devices accounted for about one-fifth of the global market share and it is becoming the most active market in the global optical device industry.

Zhou Bingyao said that since the optical fiber communication technology began commercial use in China in the 1970s, it has achieved leaps and bounds in both technology and industry scale. Especially in the past 15 years, the optical communication industry has maintained a relatively high growth rate, and it has formed a relatively complete optical fiber communication industrial chain covering optical fiber cables, optoelectronic devices, and optical transmission equipment.

Communication optoelectronic devices are the basis and core of optical transmission equipment. Zhou Bingyao believes that with the development of technologies and markets such as 3G, FTTH deployment, high-speed optical transmission and optical access, communications optoelectronic devices are becoming another key factor driving the growth of the communications market. As optical communication technologies are moving toward integration and intelligence, this poses higher requirements for miniaturization, low-cost, and low-power consumption of optical devices.

Experts also stressed that the vigorous development of China's communications market and the successful overseas market expansion of China's communications equipment manufacturers are driving the rapid development of the local optical device industry, and the important position of China's communications and optoelectronic device industry in the global market is also increasingly evident. The evolution of the next-generation optical communication system depends to a great extent on the advancement of communication and optoelectronic device technology. At the turning point of this market and technology, China's communication optoelectronic device industry is facing important development opportunities.
